We got the dictionary as Word files on 26 April. On 5 May, Macedonian Language Day, anyone could search them.

A dictionary stuck in Word files.

The goal: digitise the entire Interpretative Dictionary of the Macedonian Language and build a platform where any citizen can search all of it.

The material arrived on 26 April: Word documents with the whole dictionary. Each definition was one plain paragraph. The site had to go live on 5 May.

What we built, day by day.

Four things ran at the same time. The whole extended team worked through the 1 May long weekend.

Seven days: from paragraphs to data.

A 25-step process rebuilt the word map of every entry, using our own NLP model of the Macedonian language. Each word now has 24 properties, stored as fields in a database instead of one paragraph.

In parallel: the design.

We set the design priorities and how people would use the search.

Meanwhile: the servers.

A multi-server setup with triple redundancy for the database.

The last three and a half days: the app.

We built the web application, turned the design into HTML and CSS, and loaded all the data.

What changed.

  • Every definition, searchable by anyone.

    The whole dictionary, open to every citizen.

  • 24 fields per word, not one paragraph.

    Rebuilt with our own NLP model of Macedonian.

  • Ten days from Word files to a live site.

    Launched on Macedonian Language Day.
